Produced by bacteria, β-lactamases are enzymes present multi-resistance to β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamycins, monobactams, as well as carbapenems. These antibiotics have a common element in their molecular structure, the β-lactam ring. β-Lactamase can open the β-lactam ring through hydrolysis, thereby destroying the structure of antibiotics and inactivating the antibacterial properties.
